Letter from MDISMUN

Hello Delegates,

I am Jaxon Witherspoon, and I am the Deputy Director of MDISMUN. The MDISMUN staff, my fellow chairs, and I are so excited to welcome you to our first annual Maryland International School Model UN (MDISMUN). We hope that this is the premier model UN conference, and all of these middle school delegates learn about model UN while engaging in spirited debate.  This conference will bring academic rigor. The proposals and resolutions made will bring together bright young minds to try and tackle pressing real-world issues.

MDISMUN took almost a year to create all of our chairs, and they were enthusiastic when making their background guides.  We are so thankful for all of the administrators and chairs at this Model UN.  They have leveraged their many years of experience to create a product that will allow the next generation of global leaders to experience diplomacy.

Our Middle School delegates have a day of rigorous debate ahead of them. Whether this is your first or tenth conference, remember that MUN is about growth, not perfection. It is guaranteed that all of the delegates will gain countless skills from this experience. The day will entail the students expanding their Horizons, bringing together unique perspectives, and a rigorous debate. Whether you are debating addressing global issues like the North Korean War or trying to assess the future of the Federalist Party. We hope that every delegate walks away from MDISMUN having learned something new, gained new friends along the way, and discovered their full potential as an ambassador of diplomacy.

Thank you for joining us this December. We look forward to seeing what all of you delegates can do! Just remember: Use your voice boldly, think critically, and collaborate with purpose—you are the diplomats of tomorrow.

Jaxon Witherspoon, MDISMUN Deputy Director, Grade 11

The Reynolds Pamphlet has just been published. The world is upside down.  Dozens of copies have been distributed across the states of New York and Philadelphia. Word has begun to spread rather quickly. The content is scandalous, a full confession from Alexander Hamilton  detailing his affair and denying all allegations of public corruption. The capital is in crisis. The Federalist Party is splintering. Hamilton’s allies are furious he acted alone. Some whisper of betrayal, others call for blood. Thomas Jefferson and the Republican Party circle like vultures. They smell weakness and opportunity. Eliza Hamilton has vanished from public life. People say that she has left him and is plotting revenge, and that she too, is harbouring secrets of her own. Maria Reynolds has also disappeared. No one knows where and who helped her vanish. You have been summoned to an emergency council of political leaders, thinkers, and influencers. Behind closed doors you must determine the fate of Alexander Hamilton, and perhaps the future of the republic itself. The room is thick with tensions and history has its eyes on you. This is the moment. This is the scandal that could shatter the American experience before it even begins. You are now in the room where it happens.

Currently the war is turning in the West’s favor, recently the West pushed the North Koreans back to the 38th parallel. The north is having trouble keeping up with the south’s increased manpower and superior technology. China is starting to send in their military to aid North Korea, but none of their soldiers have entered into combat yet. The country needs more time to heal from the civil war and rebuild infrastructure. The USSR is ramping up on the production of war time resources, leading to great advancements in industrialisation. The first air raids by the USSR are about to take place, but they have not declared war out of fear of retaliation by the USA.

By 1949, the DPRK was preparing to invade the ROK. Kim traveled to Moscow to garner support from the Soviets for the invasion, and successfully got endorsement by Joseph Stalin and a vocal commitment from China. The DPRK worked hard to develop their technology, enhancing the strength of their army. A year later , the DPRK staged about 10 guerilla battles for the 38th Parallel. The ROK army (ROKA) fought diligently against the DPRK’s army (Korean People’s Army/KPA). However, we seemed to be outnumbered and out-armed by the KPA. At this point, we began working with President Truman of the US. He worked to garner the support of the UN Security council, however all resolutions to help the ROK were vetoed by the Soviets and China. The players were set, and soon, the war that will decide what regime reigns supreme over a unified Korea would begin.

Mount Olympus has existed since the beginning of time, with the anchor to the mortal world following wherever Western civilization’s epicenter was. The anchor is currently the Empire State Building, which is located in the largest city in America by population, and was a strategic move. With this anchor slowly starting to disintegrate, we might have to decide whether to move the anchor and relocate, or remain in New York City.

This committee will focus on the border based conflict seen throughout history and today, as well as any in the foreseeable future. We encourage delegates to examine the impacts of these conflicts on things such as tourism, freedom, resource availability, trade, and most importantly, the colonization that can come as a result of these conflicts. Delegates will be tasked to come up with solutions to these territorial conflicts that benefit both their State and other member states.
