Global Ambassadors Program

The Global Ambassadors Program is a signature experience for upper school students at MDIS.

Students will travel the world for language immersion, service-learning, and independent study abroad programs. These travel programs are offered in different locations every year through our partnerships with accredited student travel organizations. All trips have a curated itinerary of activities, experiences, and courses all designed to enrich students’ global knowledge, cultural exposure, and leadership beyond the classroom. In addition, all students who participate in trips of the Global Ambassadors Program earn pre-college and college credits toward STEM, humanities, and language courses. Students who participate in the program consecutively throughout middle and high school will visit five continents by graduation! This accomplishment is recognized at graduation and students are eligible for distinguished honors, awards, and scholarships.

Terrapin Adventures Team Building

Team building builds strong leaders which is one of the reasons our upper school starts the year off with a trip to an adventure course. This allows our students to build confidence while improving their communication skills while expanding their comfort zone.

Science Fair

The science fair, for grades 1-12 occurs each year in February. Students prepare all of their Science Fair materials while at school and present at the science fair event. 1st Grade works as a class to develop and present their projects, 2nd grade splits the class in half, each developing their own projects. Then, in 3rd grade students work in pairs and 4th grade and beyond students work individually to choose, develop and present their projects.

Homecoming Football

As Thanksgiving approaches we bring out our school spirit and gear up for “Homecoming Football”. MDIS’s version of homecoming football is a staff versus Upper School student flag football game. The entire school has an opportunity to take part as the student government runs concessions and the time clock and the Lower School has the chance to cheer on their “favorite” MDIS team. This is an exciting, fun-filled event which everyone enjoys.

Grandparents Day

As we return to school in September we take the opportunity to celebrate the Grandparents in our lives with a day dedicated to them & our students. Grandparents have the opportunity to come to MDIS and enjoy lunch or a snack with their grandchild. This time is enjoyable for both the students and their grandparents as they often learn more about each other’s life at school.

Echo Hill

Our sixth graders begin their middle school journey through an annual overnight trip to Echo Hill Outdoor School. Located on Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay, Echo Hill is an outdoor learning lab – 300 acres of forests, meadow, marshland, and beaches. Students hone their outdoor skills, learn about the environment and wildlife, participate in team building exercises, and return to civilization with enhanced confidence and self-esteem.

Earth Day Festival

Earth Day festival is celebrated around Earth Day each year and features special guest exhibitors, vendors, and MDIS Inventor’s Workshop with hands-on Earth Day related activities for families and students in PreK-Grade 12. In the past we have had an Interactive Show for PreK-Grade 5, an Escape Room Challenge for Grades 6-8, Bounce houses & inflatable games, Food Trucks, & a Scholastic Book Fair. This event is for MDIS families, but is also open to the public.

Celebration of Nations

Celebration of Nations is a celebration of MDIS’s ethnic and cultural diversity. The students have the opportunity to share the music, dance, food, and traditions of their heritage or another country of their choosing. This very popular family event and everyone is invited to enjoy international cuisine during our yearly pot-luck celebration.

Talent Show

The yearly talent show is a huge talk among students during the entire school year. Each March, students are welcome to register for the talent show. They have an opportunity to rehearse their act and perform in the show. The talent show is open to parents and families to attend!

STEM Festval

Annual event in conjunction with The Maryland STEM Festival that celebrates science, technology, engineering and mathematics that takes place every Fall. MDIS Students and outside vendors provide STEM-related activities and events for the community.
