5th Grade Exhibition - The Culminating PYP Experience

In the final year of the PYP, students carry out an extended, in-depth, collaborative project known as the PYP exhibition.

Exhibition is the culminating, collaborative experience in the final year of the IB Primary Years Programme. Students will explore, document, and share their understanding of a global issue that affects them locally giving them the opportunity to take action on that topic.

This involves students working collaboratively to conduct an in-depth inquiry into real-life issues or problems. Students collectively synthesize all of the essential elements of the PYP in ways that can be shared with the whole school community. The exhibition represents a unique and significant opportunity for students to exhibit the attributes of the IB learner profile developed throughout their engagement with the PYP.

Science Fair

The science fair, for grades 1-12 occurs each year in February. Students prepare all of their Science Fair materials while at school and present at the science fair event. 1st Grade works as a class to develop and present their projects, 2nd grade splits the class in half, each developing their own projects. Then, in 3rd grade students work in pairs and 4th grade and beyond students work individually to choose, develop and present their projects.

Maryland Science Center Sleep-in

Students, accompanied by teacher and parent chaperones, are able to sleep-in at the science center! This weekend event allows students to explore the current Science Center exhibits privately and then get to spend the night at the Science Center.

PYP Field Day

Field day engages and encourages the students to participate in different types of activities involving fitness, teamwork, cooperative games, and other activities which lead to a healthy lifestyle (and lots of laughs).

Homecoming Football

As Thanksgiving approaches we bring out our school spirit and gear up for “Homecoming Football”. MDIS’s version of homecoming football is a staff versus Upper School student flag football game. The entire school has an opportunity to take part as the student government runs concessions and the time clock and the Lower School has the chance to cheer on their “favorite” MDIS team. This is an exciting, fun-filled event which everyone enjoys.

Halloween

The creative and colorful Halloween costumes worn by students, faculty, and staff are showcased throughout the day and at the Lower School parade and STEM activities.

Grandparents Day

As we return to school in September we take the opportunity to celebrate the Grandparents in our lives with a day dedicated to them & our students. Grandparents have the opportunity to come to MDIS and enjoy lunch or a snack with their grandchild. This time is enjoyable for both the students and their grandparents as they often learn more about each other’s life at school.

Earth Day Festival

Earth Day festival is celebrated around Earth Day each year and features special guest exhibitors, vendors, and MDIS Inventor’s Workshop with hands-on Earth Day related activities for families and students in PreK-Grade 12. In the past we have had an Interactive Show for PreK-Grade 5, an Escape Room Challenge for Grades 6-8, Bounce houses & inflatable games, Food Trucks, & a Scholastic Book Fair. This event is for MDIS families, but is also open to the public.

Celebration of Nations

Celebration of Nations is a celebration of MDIS’s ethnic and cultural diversity. The students have the opportunity to share the music, dance, food, and traditions of their heritage or another country of their choosing. This very popular family event and everyone is invited to enjoy international cuisine during our yearly pot-luck celebration.

Talent Show

The yearly talent show is a huge talk among students during the entire school year. Each March, students are welcome to register for the talent show. They have an opportunity to rehearse their act and perform in the show. The talent show is open to parents and families to attend!
