Distance Learning
About CyberEd@MDIS
CyberEd@MDIS is our standards-aligned, distance learning program developed and designed by MDIS instructional leadership and teachers.
Our head start on planning this program back in February allowed us to launch our online learning program on March 18th, 2020, thus maintaining continuity of education for our students as our physical campus closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Instruction and assignments are:
- A hybrid of synchronous learning (live sessions) and asynchronous learning activities using a wide variety of technologies
- Aligned with International Baccalaureate curriculum standards and pedagogical methods
- Designed to help students develop in the areas of research skills, thinking skills, and communication skills, social skills, and self-management skills – Approaches to Learning that are part of the IB curriculum framework
Parent Engagement
Regular parent communication is critical to the success of our distance learning program.
We host weekly video calls with parents to answer questions and ensure aligned expectations. Weekly e-newsletters are sent to parents with updates regarding online learning and the Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) meets monthly via video conference. Parent volunteers are welcome to serve as Guest Readers for PYP and Guest Speakers for MYP/DP.
Distance Learning Curriculum Framework
How have we transitioned our students to distance learning? By taking our IB Curriculum and shifting
it to the needs of each program level.
Primary Years Programme (PYP) - Grades 1-5
Middle Years & Diploma Programmes (MYP & DP) - Grades 6-11
Primary Years Programme (PYP) - Grades 1-5
Our PYP Students attend teacher-led daily virtual live sessions corresponding with their regular class schedules. All sessions are recorded and teachers begin with reviewing the previous class material, objectives, and lesson plans found in their Google Classroom. Google slides is a popular format that teachers use to walk students through the day’s lesson step by step while incorporating Pear Deck to enhance interactive learning and to collect individualized data enabling teachers to measure the success of mastery. Lessons are a hybrid of direct instruction (plugged) and independent activities (unplugged) as developmentally appropriate.
